LIVINGSTON
– North Alabama led 33-26 at the
half, and was ahead by as many as 11
points in the final 20 minutes, but
couldn’t hold the lead as West
Alabama rallied for a 69-64 home win
over the Lions Saturday afternoon in
Gulf South Conference women’s
basketball action. The loss knocks
the Lions out of a second- place tie
in the GSC East Division. UNA is
now13-12 overall with a 6-4 mark in
conference play. With the win, the
Tigers improve to 9-15, with a 3-6
league record that jumps Montevallo
four fifth place in the division
race.
Four players reached double digits
in scoring for UWA, while the Lions
had only one three-pointer in the
second half. Trailing 37-26 in the
second half, the Tigers used a 21-8
run to take their first lead of the
game at 47-45 with 11:35 remaining.
UNA was able to regain the lead on
back-to-back jumpers by Amber
Rutherford and Lacy Lewis, but the
Tigers regained the advantage and
stretched the lead to 62-56 with
1:06 remaining. UWA was able to hold
off the Lions by sinking 11 straight
free throws in the final minute of
play.
Rutherford, Dana Jackson and Jameica
York scored 14 points to lead UNA.
Valerie Harris led all scorers with
15 points for the Tigers.
UNA will return home to face
in-state rival Alabama-Huntsville on
Saturday. The home date is being
designated as the Pink Zone game,
supporting breast cancer awareness.
Fans are encouraged to wear pink.
Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at
Flowers Hall.
