– After being tied with West Florida
at the half and again at the end of
regulation, the University of North
Alabama women’s basketball team was
able to outscore the Lady Argonauts
10-6 in the extra period to record a
62-58 overtime win Saturday
afternoon in Gulf South Conference
action. The victory was the second
in two days for the Lions at Flowers
Hall, and gives the team a 12-11
overall record with a 5-3 mark in
league play. With the loss, West
Florida falls to 8-15, 3-5.
Neither team scored from the floor
in the final 2:21 of regulation. A
pair of free throws by Jameica York
put the Lions on to 52-51 with 1:43
remaining. The Argonauts’ Tiffany
Williams hit one of two foul shots
at the 1:23 mark and neither team
could hit a potential game-winner.
In
the overtime period, UWF scored two
quick baskets to take a 56-52 lead.
The Lions responded with eight
straight points to take a 60-56
lead. After a basket by West
Florida’s Krissy Diggs, the Lions’
Brianna Abrams hit two clutch free
throws with sevens seconds remaining
and the Lions held on for the win.
UNA
hit just 30.6 percent from the
floor, including a 7-of-32 showing
in the first half. The Lions also
hit just 2-of-22 attempts from
three-point range.
Four
players reached double digits in
scoring for UNA, including Amber
Rutherford’s game-high 19 points.
York added 11 for the Lions while
Abrams and Sequoyah Cliff tossed in
10 points each.
The Lions will be
back in action on Feb. 12 at
Montevallo. Tip-off is set for 5
p.m.
