CARROLLTON, Ga., –
A five-minute scoring drought by North
Alabama in the second half allowed West
Georgia to pull away for a 63-49 home
victory Saturday evening at the newly-opened
Coliseum on the UWG campus. The Lions made
just one three-pointer all night, including
an 0-for-7 showing in the second half to
fall to 10-11 overall with a 3-3 record in
Gulf South Conference play. West Georgia,
ranked fifth in the South Region rankings,
improves to 15-5, 5-1 with the win.
After taking a 26-23 lead into the break,
the Wolves extended their advantage to eight
before a jumper by UNA’s Lacy Lewis made the
sore 42-36 with 9:01 remaining. The Lions,
however, would struggle to score the rest of
the way while UWG reeled off a 13-2 run.
A basket and free throw by Amber Rutherford
completed a three-point play to stop the
bleeding at the 4:00 mark, but the Lions
were never able to get the deficit back to
single digits. Rutherford finished with 20
points and 10 rebounds to lead UNA. Brianna
Abrams added 10 points for the Lions.
The Lions will return home to face Valdosta
State on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
at Flowers Hall.
