VALDOSTA, Ga.,
– Valdosta State maintained its
lead in the Gulf South
Conference East Division with a
65-55 home victory over North
Alabama Thursday evening in
women’s basketball action. The
Blazers remained undefeated in
league play at 6-0, and improved
to 13-7 overall. With the loss,
UNA falls to 12-12, but held on
to second place in the division
with a 4-2 conference record.
Both of North Alabama’s GSC
losses have come to VSU,
including a 76-60 setback on
Jan. 10 at Flowers Hall.
On Thursday, the Lions led early
in the game and stayed within
striking distance throughout
most of the evening. UNA led by
as many as seven in the first
half and trailed by only three
at the break. With the Blazers
holding a 30-24 lead in the
closing seconds, a three-point
basket by Ashley Moore made the
score 30-27 at the half.
The Lions tied the score at
38-38 on a three-pointer by
Kierra McCleary at the 12:18
mark in the second half. VSU,
however, responded with an 11-0
run and never trailed again.
Sanqueeta Meardith led UNA with
11 points while Sequoyah Cliff
also reached double figures in
scoring with 10 points on the
night.
The Lions will travel to
Carrollton, Ga., for another key
conference road game on
Saturday. UNA will take on West
Georgia with tip-off set for
4:30 p.m. CST.
