 FLOWERS HALL -- WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Return to UNA Women's Basketball Homepage >>>

Flowers Hall has served as the home court for the University of North Alabama's women's basketball teams since the school began its women's basketball program in 1975.  And the home court has proven to be a key factor in the overall success of the Lady Lions program.

Since the 1978-79 season, the Lady Lions have posted an impressive 228-92 record in Flowers Hall for a winning percentage of 70.6.  In their first season under current head coach Flora Willie, the Lions went 11-2 in Flowers Hall.  In 16 seasons under Wayne Byrd, the mark was  143-64, including a perfect 12-0 record at home during the 1983-84 season.  Flowers Hall played host to the  women's NCAA South Region championship game in 1984-85, with Mercer University defeating the Lions 90-86 in overtime.  Flowers Hall has also been the scene for nine men's NCAA playoff games, including regional tournaments in 1976-77, 1980-81 and 1983-84, and quarterfinal games in 1976-77, 1979-80 and 1983-84 - with UNA posting a perfect 9-0 record in those contests.

The first basketball game played in Flowers Hall was on Oct. 5, 1972, when the Boston Celtics and Atlanta Hawks battled in an exhibition game before a crowd that overflowed the 4,000 seat capacity of the new facility.  Flowers Hall is also the home of the Lions volleyball team. In 1985 the original synthetic floor was replaced with a new synthetic floor. Also, in that same year a new four-sided scoreboard was added to enhance the Lion's home court. In 1989 new theater seating was installed on the home side for season-ticket holders. The most recent addition came in the summer of 1994 when a new maple wood floor was installed.
