Brenda Mayes, a native of Corinth, Miss., was a  two-year letterman in women's baskeball at North Alabama in 1984 and 1985 and helped lead the Lions to their first Gulf South Conference women's basketball championship and their first NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Tournament appearances.  

Mayes was chosen All-Gulf South Conference in 1984 and 1985, was a member of the NCAA Division II South Regional All-Tournament team in 1985 and was an honorable mention  All-American as a senior. She helped lead UNA to its first NCAA Division II Tournament appearance in 1984 and to a GSC regular-season title, a GSC Tournament crown and a second NCAA berth in 1985. She scored 919 career points in just two seasons, with 468 points in 1984 and 451 in 1985. Hit 50.7 percent of her career shots, making 399-of-786 attempts. She scored 30 or more points in a single game three times, with a high 34 points against West Georgia in 1985.

Mayes graduated from UNA in 1986 with a B.S. degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation, and later received her Master’s  degree from UNA in 1990.  She is also enjoying a  highly successful coaching career at Muscle Shoals High School, where her volleyball teams have won three straight state championships in 1998, 1999 and 2000, earning her numerous regional, state and national coaching awards.  Mayes earned a B.S. degree in Physical Education from UNA in 1986 and added a Master's in Education degree from UNA in 1990.
