VOLLEYBALL LIONS DOWN SHORTER 3-0

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama volleyball swept three close sets from Shorter on Friday to improve to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in Gulf South Conference play. The 25-23, 25-21, 31-29 home victory is the eighth straight win for the Lions, keeping the team in a first-place tie in the league standings.
 
Natasha Fomina had 14 kills and Ashtyn Kapovich turned in a season-high 26 digs on the night. Fomina helped the Lions get off to a fast start with six kills in the opening set. Her kill ended the game as the Lions held on for the 25-23 victory.
 
In the second set, the Hawks had trouble finding offense. Shorter hit -.049 as a team while Kapovich had 12 digs in the frame. Lexie Bradley added four blocks in the set as UNA pulled away down the stretch.
 
The third set provided the most drama. North Alabama reached match point with a 24-20 lead but could not put the Hawks away. Shorter scored five straight points to grab a 25-24 lead and earn a set point of its own. From there, the score was tied five more times with each team getting a pair of set points. A Shorter service error, followed by a ball handling error on the Hawks ended the game.
 
Bradley finished with 12 kills for UNA while setter Andrea De Leon had 39 assists and 12 digs on the night. Shorter was led by Tiffani Estep's seven kills.
 
The Lions will host Lee Saturday afternoon in another key GSC showdown. Match time is set for 2 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
