CARROLLTON, Ga. – Second ranked West Georgia scored on six of its first seven offensive possessions and went on to post a 31-10 win over 13
th ranked North Alabama at University Stadium.
With the loss, North Alabama falls to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the Gulf South Conference. West Georgia is now 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the GSC. It was just West Georgia's second win over the Lions in the last 11 meetings in the series.
West Georgia finished the game with 485 yards of total offense as the Wolves rushed for 383 and passed for 107. North Alabama's offense struggled, converting on just four of 14 third down attempts. UNA gained 318 total yards with 139 rushing and 179 passing.
West Georgia completely dominated the first half, scoring on three of its four possessions and turning the ball over at the UNA one-yard line on the other.
The Wolves took the opening kickoff and drove deep into UNA territory before a halfback pass was picked off by
Floyd Jones. The Lions then marched to the West Georgia nine before settling for a 26-yard
Kevin Henke field goal. The score gave UNA a 3-0 advantage at the 3:50 mark of the period. The drive was marred by a late hit out of bounds on UNA starting quarterback
Luke Wingo by West Georgia's Marion Chapman that injured Wingo and forced him out of the game. Backup
Jacob Tucker came on to complete the drive.
West Georgia found the end zone on its next possession, driving 75 yards in just four plays. Wil Garrett scored on a two-yard run and Hunter Heck added the PAT to give the Wolves a 7-3 lead with 2:17 remaining in the first quarter.
After another 75-yard drive on its next possession, West Georgia settled for a 24-yard Heck field goal to extend its lead to 10-3 with 11:07 left in the second quarter.
Devontae Jackson scored on a nine-yard run with 1:58 left in the half to extend the Wolves lead to 17-3.
Wingo, who returned to the game with a wrapped left arm, hit
Dre Hall with a 49-yard pass just before the half to put UNA in field goal range. Henke's 25-yard attempt was blocked and the half ended with the Lions down 17-3.
West Georgia out-gained UNA 313 to 156 in the half and held the ball for more than 19 minutes.
The Wolves scored on their first two possessions of the second half to extend their lead to 31-3 after UNA went three-and-out on its first two possessions.
Garrett scored on a seven-yard run at 10:37 of the third quarter to make it 24-3 and Jackson scored on an eight-yard run with 7:58 left in the quarter to make it 31-3.
UNA finally found the end zone with 13:32 left in the game on a one-yard run around right end by Wingo. Henke's PAT made it 31-10.
North Alabama had another scoring opportunity in the fourth quarter but was held on a fourth down play at the Wolves one-yard line.
North Alabama hosts Delta State on October 31 at 1:30 at Braly Stadium.
