FLORENCE – After holding on to win two close sets, the University of North Alabama volleyball team completed the sweep over Valdosta State on Friday with a dominating performance in the third game. The 25-19, 25-22, 25-13 home victory gave the Lions a 14-3 overall record and 8-1 mark in Gulf South Conference play.
Three players recorded at least 11 kills for the Lions to help hand VSU its second consecutive loss after starting the season with 12 straight wins. Lexie Bradley led the way with 13 kills and hit .333 for the match as UNA grabbed sole possession of second place in the league standings.
After leading throughout each of the first two sets, the Lions held off a pair of VSU rallies to take a 2-0 overall lead. In the third set, Jessica Austin had six of her 12 kills on the night. The sophomore from Farmington Hills, Mich., finished the match with a .522 hitting percentage.
Natasha Fomina also hit .231 and finished with 11 kills for North Alabama. Setter Andrea De Leon had 40 assists while Ashtyn Kapovich (15 digs) and Peyton Lang (12 digs) led the defensive effort.
Valdosta State (12-2 overall, 7-2 GSC) was led by Anita Rodriguez-Sanchez, who finished with 12 kills for the match.
The win sets up another key GSC showdown for the Lions on Saturday. UNA will host No. 19 West Florida, which is 16-2 overall and 9-0 in league play. Match time is set for 2 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
