LIONS WIN SHARE OF GSC TITLE WITH 52-14 WIN

FLORENCE, Ala. – The University of North Alabama routed West Alabama 52-14 and claimed a share of the 2015 Gulf South Conference football title.
 
With the win, the Lions also improved to 8-2 overall and closed the regular-season with a 6-1 league mark.
 
The 2015 Lions become just the third football team in Gulf South Conference history to win three straight conference championships.
 
UNA built a commanding 31-7 halftime lead and added 21 additional points over the final two periods.
 
UNA quarterback Luke Wingo completed 32 of 40 passes for 450 yards and tied a school record with five touchdown passes. He also added a rushing touchdown.
 
The Lions finished with 592 total yards, picking up 140 on the ground and 452 through the air. West Alabama was held to 250 total yards and threw three interceptions.
 
UNA's Jarret Smith caught nine passes for 115 yards and one touchdown and Dre Hall had six catches for 153 yards and three TDs.
 
North Alabama dominated the first half, building a 31-7 lead after out-gaining the Tigers 349 to 88. The Lions had 18 first downs to three for the Tigers and Wingo completed 26-of-32 passes for 324 yards.
 
The Lions took a 3-0 lead on its opening possession on a 28-yard Kevin Henke field goal. The kick capped a 14-play, 73-yard drive that took 5:27 off the clock.
 
Wingo then hit Dre Hall with a 15-yard touchdown pass at the 4:25 mark of the first quarter and Henke's PAT made it 10-0.
 
Wingo threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Julius Jones at 10:06 of the second quarter to make it 17-0 after Henke's PAT.
 
West Alabama got on the board on an 11-yard pass from Harry Satterwhite to Daryl Collins with 7:24 left in the half but UNA responded with two more scores before intermission.
 
Hall pulled in a 77-yard pass from Wingo with 6:20 left in the period, then caught an 11-yard TD pass with just 57 seconds remaining to make it 31-7. Hall finished the half with six catches for 153 yards.
 
West Alabama scored on the opening possession of the second half on a 23-yard run by Tyler Rogers to make it 31-14, but UNA answered immediately with a 67-yard TD strike from Wingo to Smith with 10:16 left in the third quarter.
 
UNA's final two scores came on a two-yard Wingo run at 11:27 of the fourth quarter and a six-yard run by Jacob Tucker with 7:39 left in the game.
 
The NCAA Division II Playoff pairings will be announced Sunday at 4 p.m. and the Lions, currently ranked second in Super Region 2, are expected to receive their 20th NCAA playoff invitation.
