FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., – A second half rally came up short as the University of North Alabama women's basketball team dropped a 75-67 decision to Barry Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Lions fall to 0-2 on the season and will return to Florence for their home opener Thursday against Tuskegee.
Against the Buccaneers, UNA trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half before rallying to tie the game in the fourth quarter. North Alabama trailed 40-31 at the half and faced a 58-42 deficit with 2:50 remaining in the third quarter.
KeKe Gunter started the comeback with a three-point play on the ensuing possession. UNA closed the quarter on a 10-2 run. In the fourth quarter, the Lions continued to chip away at the deficit. A three-point basket by Jaclyn Heath tied the score at 65-65 at the 4:23 mark. UNA, however, could never take the lead.
Barry scored six straight points to grab a 71-65 lead and the Lions could get no closer than four the rest of the way. The Bucs held a 36-26 advantage in rebounding and scored 21 second-chance points.
Five players reached double figures in scoring for North Alabama with Gunter getting a team-high 15 points. Janae Lyde and Katelyn Nunley also scored 13 points each for the Lions. Shunice Herron added 12 points while Heath finished with 11 points for the game.
Amra Elezovic led Barry (1-1) with a game-high 25 points.
Tip-off time for the game against Tuskegee is set for 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
