PENSACOLA, Fla., – Three players reached double digits in kills as the University of North Alabama volleyball team downed Valdosta State 3-0 to advance to the 2015 Gulf South Conference championship match. The 25-16, 25-19, 25-17 victory in the semi-final round is the third over VSU this season and gives the Lions a 25-7 record. UNA will face top seed and tournament host West Florida Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at the UWF Field House in Pensacola, Fla.
Against the Blazers, UNA hit .319 as a team. Natasha Fomina led all players with 15 kills while Jessica Austin turned in 12 kills and a .545 hitting percentage. Lexie Bradley rounded out the top hitters for the Lions with 11 kills on the day.
In the first set, the Lions trailed 7-5 before reeling off four straight points to take the lead for good. Fomina had a team-high five kills in the opening frame. North Alabama never trailed in the second set, jumping out to a 13-5 lead and holding off a late VSU rally. Bradley had seven kills and hit .875 in the game to lead the Lions.
In the final set, UNA pulled away for the win. With the game tied at 12-12, the Lions scored five straight points to take control. Fomina again led the way with six kills, including the one at match point.
Andrea De Leon added a double-double with 43 assists and 12 digs on the day. Ashtyn Kapovich had a match-high 16 digs while Peyton Lang recorded 11 digs for UNA.
