LIONS FALL TO FLORIDA SOUTHERN IN NCAA TOURNEY

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., – No. 21 Florida Southern hit .287 for the match and had three players reach double figures in kills in a 3-1 win over the University of North Alabama volleyball team Thursday in the opening round of the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament. The 21-25, 22-25, 26-24, 15-25 loss on the campus of Palm Beach Atlantic ends the Lions' season with a 26-8 record.

After falling behind 0-2 in the match, UNA avoided elimination with a 26-24 victory in the third set. FSC, however, hit .400 in the fourth set to clinch the match and advance to the second round.

"Obviously it's disappointing," said UNA head coach Stephanie Radecki. "We've had a great season and we have a really tough group but things just didn't go our way today. Florida Southern had a lot to do with that. They played extremely well offensively. Defensively, they were relentless at bringing balls back over the net."

In the opening set, UNA led 16-15 before the Mocs took control with six straight points. After a pair of UNA timeouts, the Lions scored four of the next five points to pull to within two at 22-20. Florida Southern responded with a 3-1 spurt to close the set. FSC standout Brindl Langley led all players with six kills in the first frame. Natasha Fomina led UNA with four kills, but the Lions hit just .022 in the set.

After trailing by as many as seven points in the second set, North Alabama rallied to take the lead. A double block by Lexie Bradley and Victoria Quintanilla gave the Lions a 21-20 lead before the Mocs again used a late run to get the win. Fomina had five kills and three service aces in the set. UNA, however, struggled at the net again, hitting .075 in the game.

UNA stayed alive in the third set by holding off a Florida Southern rally. The Lions led most of the game and held an 18-14 advantage before the FSC comeback. Back-to-back FSC points made the score 24-23 to give the Mocs a match point. It was the first lead for Florida Southern since holding a 2-1 advantage early in the set. Jessica Austin helped North Alabama regain the lead with a kill and a solo block. Fomina then recorded a kill to end the set. Peyton Lang recorded four of her seven kills in the set for the Lions.

"Our team has been tough all year and we have faced some deficits" Radecki added. "When it was close in the third set I was really confident our girls were going to find a way to win. They came up with some big plays. In a championship tournament like this, the teams that makes the most big plays wins. Unfortunately, we came out flat in that fourth set."

Florida Southern jumped out to an early lead and never looked back to clinch the match with a 25-15 victory in the fourth set. UNA briefly led 2-1 but hit .000 in the final frame. Kayshia Brady led Florida Southern (24-8) with a match-high 17 kills.

Fomina led UNA with 14 kills on the day. Bradley added 11 kills while setter Andrea De Leon recorded 35 assists and a team-high 19 digs. Defensively, Ashtyn Kapovich had 18 digs. Sarah Ann Tiller added 12 digs while Lang finished with 10 digs for the match.

"My experience at UNA the last two years has been great," said De Leon, who also received NCAA South Region All-Tournament honors. I found myself again as a player. I had great coaching and a great group of ladies. I feel like UNA Volleyball was a perfect fit for me."

De Leon is the team's lone senior. The Lions will look to return the bulk of the 2015 squad next season, including Fomina, who led the team with 451 kills on the year.

"This has definitely raised our expectations for next season," Fomina said. "We know that we have the talent to not only win our conference but make a run in this tournament as well. It's sad that things didn't end up the way we wanted them to today but we have a great group of players who will continue to have high expectations every year."
