FLORENCE, Ala. --
Melanie Leonida scored off a corner kick from
Eleanor Costello to give the University of North Alabama a 2-1 overtime win over Cumberland and extend the Lions regular season unbeaten streak to 15 matches.
UNA, now 7-0-1 in 2015, held a 1-0 lead with just 27 seconds left in regulation play when Cumberland tied it on a goal from Savannah Keele. The match then went to overtime but Leonida scored just 2:26 into the extra period to give the Lions the win.
It was UNA's eighth straight win at home and kept the Lions perfect all-time against Cumberland at 4-0. The Bulldogs fell to 2-6 with the loss.
The only score of the first half came from
Stacey Webber at the 38:31 mark off an assist from
Alyssa Bova. UNA out-shot Cumberland 24-10 but couldn't find the net again until Leonida's overtime kick.
The 17th ranked Lions got a strong performance from
Shelby Thornton in goal with seven saves. Cumberlan's goal broke UNA's defensive scoreless streak of 345:48 dating back to a first half goal by Alabama-Huntsville on September 17.
North Alabama travels to Valdosta State for a Friday evening Gulf South Conference match at 5 p.m. Central.
