FLORENCE, Ala. -- University of North Alabama forward
Eleanor Costello scored three goals in an 18-minute period of the second half to help lead the Lions to a 5-0 Gulf South Conference win over Valdosta State on UNA's 2016 Senior Day.
Costello, playing her final home regular-season match for the Lions, extended a 2-0 UNA to with goals in the 62nd, 72nd and 80th minute to push her season total to eight.
With the win, the Lions stay alive in the race for a spot in the Gulf South Conference Tournament. UNA is now 7-7 overall and 6-4 in GSC play. Valdosta State falls to 1-10-4 overall and 1-6-3 in the GSC.
The Lions remaining two regular season games are on the road, playing at Christian Brothers on October 26 and at Union on October 29.
UNA claimed the early lead with a goal just 1:12 into the match. Senior
Susan Lang scored off an assist from Costello to put the Lions on top 1-0.
UNA's
Kylie Huey then scored at the 13;56 mark off an assist from
Alyssa Bova to push it to 2-0.
Costello's first two goals came from distance and were unassisted at the 61:46 and 71:18 marks.
The final goal, at 79:39, was off an assist from
Shelby Wall.
UNA out-shot VSU 27 to 11.
North Alabama goalkeeper
Kate Webster recorded four saves as UNA recorded the shutout.
