Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

UNA MEN TOP DELTA STATE IN OVERTIME

FLORENCE – John Fletcher sank two free throws with 5.6 seconds remaining in overtime and Delta State was unable to get a shot off on its ensuing possession, preserving an 81-80 home victory for the University of North Alabama men's basketball team on Saturday. The win snapped a two-game skid and keeps the Lions in third place in the GSC standings.

UNA overcame a four-point deficit in the final 28 seconds to shock the Statesmen. After two free throws gave DSU a 78-74 lead, Jeff Hodge took the inbounds pass and raced the length of the floor before connecting on a contested three-point attempt.

After Delta State extended its lead to 79-77 by hitting one of two free throws, Hodge was called for a charge with 15 seconds remaining. Devin Schmidt then hit one of two foul shots to keep the lead at three points.

A basket by Fletcher with 10.7 seconds left made the score 80-79 and set the stage for a frantic finish. With the Lions applying full-court pressure, a long pass was corralled by Fletcher, who drew a foul with less than six seconds to play. The senior from San Diego, Calif., calmly sank both free throws to give UNA the lead for good.

Fletcher finished with 19 points, including a 10-of-12 showing from the free throw line. Austin Timms added 17 points while Tavaras Tolliver had 16 points and eight rebounds. Bilal Richardson rounded out the top scores with 11 points for the Lions.

The Lions led 38-29 at the half and had a chance to win in regulation, leading 63-55 with just over two minutes to play. DSU, however, used a 10-2 run to tie the game. Schmidt led all scorers with 34 points.

UNA (15-10 overall, 12-7 GSC) trails West Georgia by a game for second place and owns a one-game lead over Union, Delta State and Valdosta State. UAH has already clinched first place

The Lions will host Union on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
