LIONS FALL IN OPENING ROUND OF GSC TOURNEY

FLORENCE – North Alabama could never find its offensive rhythm Tuesday evening in the opening round of the 2016 Gulf South Conference Men's Basketball Tournament. Delta State limited the Lions to 29 percent shooting, including a 4-of-22 showing from three-point range in a 90-59 win at Flowers Hall.
 
With the loss, UNA closes out the 2015-16 campaign with a 16-13 record, falling in the first round of the conference tournament for the second straight season. Delta State (19-10) advances to the semi-finals, played next weekend on the campus of Samford University in Birmingham.
 
On Tuesday, baskets were hard to come by for the Lions from the opening tip. UNA missed its first eight three-point attempts and did not score a field goal until the 14:24 mark of the first half.
 
The Statesmen led by as many as 12 in the opening 20 minutes of play and took a 33-25 lead into the break. Delta State quickly pushed the lead to double digits in the opening minutes of the second half.
 
After the teams traded three-pointers early in the period, DSU used a 6-0 spurt to grab a 42-28 lead. The Lions were able to get within nine points only once more. A three-point basket by Dakota Holtzclaw and a layup by Tavaras Tolliver made the score 44-35 with 15:02 remaining.
 
Delta State answered with a 9-0 run to take an 18-point lead and maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the way. The Statesmen were able to hold off any attempt at a UNA rally by taking care of the ball. DSU committed only six turnovers on the night.  The Lions failed to convert any of the Delta State miscues into points.
 
John Fletcher led North Alabama with 12 points. Holtzclaw tied a season-high with 11 points and eight rebounds while Bilal Richardson finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.
 
PJ Davis and Jack Madgen scored 20 points each to lead Delta State.
