WOMEN’S TENNIS UPSETS NO. 26 SHORTER

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama women's tennis team kicked off spring break with an upset win in Gulf South Conference play. The Lions knocked off No. 26 Shorter 6-3 Friday afternoon at Cox Creek Park. With the win, the Lions even their record at 6-6 overall and 5-3 in GSC play.
 
Shorter, which was also ranked No. 7 in the latest South Region rankings, falls to 7-7 overall and 4-3 in league action.
 
Avery King and Claire DeGeorge got the Lions a quick 1-0 lead with a solid 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles. 
 
After Shorter was able to even the match at 1-1 with a win at the top doubles spot, Olivera Ngouabeu and Nele Sietz came from behind for an 8-6 win at No. 2 to give UNA the lead heading into singles play.

The Hawks were able to even the match at 2-2 with a win at No. 1 singles before DeGeorge once again gave the Lions a lead. Her 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles but UNA ahead 3-2 in the match.
King extended the lead winning 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4 singles before Shorter narrowed the gap by winning at No. 2.

With the Lions leading 4-3, both Seitz at No. 5 singles and Donna Haycock at No. 3 split sets. Seitz raced out to a quick lead and held on to clinch the match winning 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. Haycock also was able to win the third set for the 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory.

"Wow, what a win for the women," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop.  "Shorter is such a tough team, I'm so proud of our effort today. That was a big win for Oli and Nele in doubles. We needed some energy and they gave it to us."

North Alabama will return to action on Friday, April 1, with another key GSC match at home. The Lions will host Lee, beginning at 1 p.m.
