UNA VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS TIGERS TO OPEN GSC PLAY

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama volleyball team opened Gulf South Conference play with a 3-0 win over West Alabama Tuesday evening at Flowers Hall. Natasha Fomina and Lexie Bradley combined for 21 kills in the 25-14, 25-15, 25-23 victory that improved the Lions' overall record to 9-0 on the season.
 
After dominating the first two sets, UNA was forced to rally to win the third. Trailing 23-20 in the final frame, the Lions closed the match with five straight points to complete the sweep.
 
A kill by Jayden Davila-McClary started the rally. After the next serve, a diving dig by Ana Gabriela Pacheco kept play alive and allowed Fomina to connect from the right side. The kill made the score 23-22 and prompted a West Alabama timeout.
 
After the break, McClary tied the set with a service ace. A kill by Fomina then gave the Lions a 24-23 lead and an attack error on the Tigers ended the match.
 
Fomina finished the match with 11 kills and a .588 hitting percentage. Bradley added 10 kills on the night while McClary produced 10 digs and 35 assists. Ashtyn Kapovich also recorded a match-high 13 digs for North Alabama.
 
West Alabama (6-3) was led by Briana Sandifer's match-high 15 kills.
 
UNA will hit the road for its next two GSC matches. The Lions will play at Shorter Friday evening, followed by a Saturday afternoon match at Lee.
