UNA VOLLEYBALL OPENS 2016 SEASON WITH TWO WINS

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama volleyball team opened the 2016 season with a pair of victories Friday at home. The Lions knocked off Martin Methodist 3-0 and Northwood 3-1 on the opening day of the UNA Volleyball Classic at Flowers Hall.
 
Natasha Fomina had 33 kills on the day, including 19 in the nightcap against Northwood. Lexie Bradley added 19 kills with a .368 hitting percentage while sophomore Jayden Davila-McClary made her debut for the Lions with a pair of double-doubles.
 
In the opener, Fomina had 14 kills as the Lions held MMC to a -.071 team hitting percentage. She hit .316 with eight kills in the final frame as UNA clinched the 25-16, 25-10, 25-11 victory.
 
Davila-McClary recorded a double-double with 37 assists and 12 digs in her first match for the Lions. The setter from Winter Garden, Fla., added four kills and an .800 hitting percentage. Peyton Lang also had 11 digs and just missed a double-double with nine kills on the match.
 
Defensively, four UNA players notched at least 11 digs, including a match-high 18 from Ashtyn Kapovich. Ava Carnley also had a career-high 12 digs for the Lions.
 
North Alabama had to rally to win the nightcap. Northwood won the opening set before the Lions recorded three straight wins in the 22-25, 25-12, 25-18, 25-21 win.
 
Trailing in the match, UNA opened the second set on a 12-4 and never looked back. Northwood was held to a -.033 hitting percentage in the frame. The third set featured the best offensive showing for the Lions. North Alabama hit .344 as a team, using a balanced attack from Bradley (five kills), Fomina (four kills) and Lang (four kills).
 
Northwood led 19-18 in the fourth set before the Lions clinched the match with another comeback. After three straight points gave UNA a 21-18 lead, the Timberwolves closed the gap to a single point at 21-20. The visitors, however, would get no closer.
 
UNA will play twice on Saturday to close out the event. The Liosn will take on Tiffin at 1:30 p.m. before facing Trevecca Nazarene at 7:30.
