Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

LIONS EDGE SHORTER 87-86

ROME, Ga., – Two free throws by Tavaras Tolliver gave North Alabama an 87-86 lead and the Lions came up with a pair of defensive stops in the final minute of play to escape with a one-point victory Saturday afternoon in Gulf South Conference men's basketball action. The third straight victory gives UNA a 10-7 overall record with a 5-6 mark in GSC play.

After the foul shots by Tolliver gave UNA the one-point lead with 48.8 seconds remaining, GSC leading scorer Phil Taylor drove the lane on the ensuing possession. Austin Timms, however, came up with a block to give possession back to the Lions.

After a missed shot by UNA, the Hawks were able to track down a loose ball with 11.6 seconds to go for one more chance. Following the inbounds pass, the Lions defense forced a Shorter timeout with 3.2 seconds remaining.

Taylor then got possession near midcourt and drove down the left side of the lane. His runner was off the mark, preserving the win for North Alabama.

Tolliver finished with 23 points and eight rebounds to lead UNA. His two free throws at the end of the game were his only attempts at the line on the day. Johnell Ginnie scored 20 points for the second time in three games. The junior from Jacksonville, Fla., also added nine rebounds.

Timms also had 13 points while Dimario Jackson rounded out the top scorers for UNA with 12 points. He flirted with a triple-double after adding nine rebounds and six assists on the day.

UNA led 47-38 at the break and was ahead by as many as 13 in the second half. Shorter, however, rallied down the stretch. An 11-2 run by the Hawks cut the deficit to 76-74 with 5:50 remaining.

After the Lions stretched the lead back to four on two different occasions, Taylor connected on two free throws and a three-point basket to give the home team an 81-80 lead with 3:54 to play.

After Shorter pushed the lead to 86-83, UNA got a pair of free throws by Jackson at the 1:19 mark. A defensive stop then gave the Lions possession, where Tolliver drew the foul after grabbing an offensive rebound. His two shots from the line gave UNA the lead for good.

For the game, North Alabama shot 48.4 percent from the floor and connected on 14-of-18 attempts from the free throw line. The Lions also held a 42-38 advantage in rebounding.

Taylor led Shorter (10-7 overall, 4-7 GSC) with a game-high 40 points. It's the fifth time the senior from Brooklyn, N.Y., has scored at least 40 points this season.

UNA will host Mississippi College on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
