FLORENCE, Ala. -- Isabella Garcia took a partially blocked ball from a free kick and put it in the goal to give the University of West Florida a 3-2 win in two overtimes over the University of North Alabama in the opening round of the South Region NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Tournament.
With the win, West Florida (16-4-1) advances to face top-seeded Mississippi College in the second round at 1 p.m. Sunday at UNA's Bill Jones Athletic Complex. North Alabama ended its season at 13-4-2.
With the match tied at 2-2 in the 107th minute, UWF's Shantell Thompson took a free kick that was blocked but played back into the goal by Garcia to give the Argonauts the win. It was Garcia's fifth goal of the season.
North Alabama held a 2-0 lead at intermission on a pair of goals from junior Kylie Huey.
Huey's first goal at the 22:24 mark was unassisted as she played herself into the open at midfield and then made a move around the keeper for an uncontested goal. Huey then added her second goal at 38:15 off an assist from Margarida Sousa.
West Florida got on the scoreboard less than two minutes into the second half as Garce Busby scored her sixth goal of the season off an assist from Thompson at the 46:24 mark.
The Argonauts got the game-tying goal at 53:54 as Busby assisted Jessica Quixley on her eighth goal of the season.
North Alabama goal keeper Shelby Thornton thwarted a UWF penalty kick late in regulation play and neither team could manage a score until Garcia ended the match at 106:50.
West Florida held a 16 to 12 advantage in shots.
