LIONS CLINCH GSC TOURNEY BERTH WITH WIN OVER UNION

JACKSON, Tenn., – Johnell Ginnie scored 32 points to lead the University of North Alabama men's basketball team to a 96-78 win over Union on Thursday, clinching a spot for the Lions in the upcoming Gulf South Conference Tournament.

With a 14-13 overall record and 9-12 mark in GSC play, UNA can finish no lower than eighth in the conference standings. The Lions are currently tied with Union for seventh place. A UNA win over Christian Brothers in the regular-season finale on Saturday and a Union loss against UAH on the same day would give the Lions the No. 7 seed.

On Thursday, Ginnie was 13-of-16 from the floor. He added a 6-for-6 showing from three-point range to add to his career-high performance.

UNA led 45-36 at the break. After Union grabbed a 20-15 lead midway through the first half, a three-pointer by Ginnie started a 24-8 run by the Lions. A dunk by Austin Timms capped the run and gave North Alabama a 39-28 lead with 3:32 remaining in the half.

The Lions were able to hold of several second-half runs by Union. After getting within three points on three different occasions, the Bulldogs pulled to within a single point at 69-68 at the 7:17 mark.

Dimario Jackson answered for UNA with a three-pointer to start a 16-0 run. DeAndre McKinnie scored five points during the spurt and another dunk by Timms capped the run, giving the Lions an 86-69 lead with 2:47 to play. Union answered with a three-pointer on its ensuing possession, but would get no closer.

McKinnie finished with a trio of three-point baskets and turned in 22 points for North Alabama. Timms added 17 points and 11 rebounds while Jeff Hodge tossed in 12 points for the Lions.

For the game, UNA shot over 50 percent from the floor in each half, including a 19-for-34 (55.9 percent) showing over the final 20 minutes of play.

UNA will close the regular season on Saturday at Christian Brothers. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. at Canale Arena on the CBU campus.
