SHORTER MEN WIN SHOOTOUT OVER LIONS 117-111

FLORENCE – Six different players scored more than 20 points in Shorter's 117-111 overtime victory at North Alabama Saturday in Gulf South Conference men's basketball action. Each team had three players surpass 20-plus points as the Hawks held on for the win at Flowers Hall.
 
With the loss, UNA falls to 12-10 overall and 7-9 in GSC play, falling to seventh place in the latest league standings.
 
Prior to regulation ending in a 99-99 tie, the Lions overcame a 20-point second-half deficit and the ejection of head coach Bobby Champagne with just under 10 minutes remaining. In the extra period, before Shorter was able to grab a late lead in the extra period before holding on for the win.
 
Dimario Jackson scored a game-high 29 points to lead UNA. His jumper with 17.4 seconds remaining tied the game at 99-99 and the Lions got a defensive stop as time expired to force overtime.
 
Shorter never trailed in the extra period. After the two teams traded quick baskets, the Hawks connected on a three-pointer by Mike Wickliff to take a 104-101 lead. UNA closed to within a single point on several occasions but could never tie the game.
 
North Alabama was 4-of-17 from the floor in the extra period while Shorter shot 66.7 percent in overtime. The Hawks finished the game with 19 three-point baskets.
 
Austin Timms and Tavaras Tolliver added 24 points each for the Lions. Jeff Hodge also scored 12 points on the day.
 
With the win, Shorter improves to 14-8 overall and 8-8 in GSC play. The Hawks, which avenged a one-point home loss to UAN earlier in the season, were led by Phil Taylor and Damerit Brown, who scored 25 points each.
 
UNA will travel to West Georgia for its next GSC game. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. (Eastern) on the UWG campus in Carrollton, Ga.
