UNA MEN’S, WOMEN’S TENNIS TOPS SHORTER

ROME, Ga., – A pair of dominating road victories at Shorter by the University of North Alabama men's and women's tennis team kept both squads undefeated in Gulf South Conference play on Friday. The men won 9-0 while the women posted a 7-2 win.
 
The fifth straight victory by the UNA men's team gave the Lions a 6-2 overall record with a 3-0 mark in GSC play. North Alabama quickly got control in doubles play and never looked back.
 
A pair of 8-1 victories at No. 3 and No. 2 doubles was followed by an 8-2 win at the top spot to give UNA a commanding 3-0 lead. Max Druppel then made it 4-0 with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles before Miguel Garcia clinched the match with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 triumph at No. 2 singles.
 
Gustavo Girao (No. 3), Ray Donovan (No. 4), Taylor Ausbon (No. 5) and George Markos (No. 6) completed the singles sweep for the Lions.
 
"This was a good, solid win," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "The guys were focused from the first ball."
 
The UNA women's team took a 2-1 lead after doubles play before winning five of six singles matches to move to 5-3 overall and 4-0 in league action.
 
Nina Linke and Claire DeGeorge got the Lions on the scoreboard first by winning 8-4 at No. 3 doubles. 
Olivera Ngouabeu and Nele Seitz made it 2-0 with an 8-3 win at No. 2 before the Hawks won a 9-7 decision at the top doubles spot.
 
Returning from an injury last week, Ngouabeu made it 3-1 with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the top spot. After Shorter closed the gap with a win at No. 2, Linke made it 4-2 by posting a 7-6, 7-6 win at No. 3 singles. DeGeorge then clinched the match for the Lions by winning 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
 
Seitz (No. 5) and Donna Haycock (No. 4) closed out the scoring for UNA with straight sets victories.
 
"The women played really well today," Bishop added. "It was good to have everybody out there again."
 
Both teams will continue their GSC road swings on Saturday with a 10 a.m. match at Lee.
