LIONS FALL AT VMI

LEXINGTON, Va., – A 27-point deficit at the half proved too large to overcome for the University of North Alabama men's basketball team during an 89-68 loss at VMI on Friday. With the loss, UNA falls to 3-10 on the season.

VMI shot 47.2 percent from the floor and hit eight three-point baskets to build the big lead at the break. The Keydets made their move midway through the opening period. After a putback by Cantavio Dutreil gave the Lions a 23-22 lead, VMI scored the next 24 point to take control.

UNA went 9:36 without a basket while the home team built a 23-point advantage. After grabbing the lead, the Lions had turnovers on their next four possessions, then missed 14 straight shots from the floor. A basket by Kendarius Smith ended the drought and made the score 46-25 in the final minute of play. VMI responded with a pair of three-pointers, including a buzzer-beater to give the Keydets a 52-25 lead at the half.

North Alabama outscored VMI 43-37 over the final 20 minutes of play, but could get no closer than 12 points. A free throw by Christian Agnew made the score 69-57 with 6:50 remaining. The Keydets, however, responded with a three-pointer on the ensuing possession and maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way.

VMI (6-7) finished the game with 15 treys, including six from Bubba Parham who finished with a game-high 29 points.

Four players reached double figures for UNA. Kendall Stafford led the way with 16 points. Jamari Blackmon added 15 points while Agnew tossed in 13 points on the night. Smith rounded out the top scorers for the Lions with 10 points.

UNA will play at nationally-ranked Gonzaga on Dec. 28. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. (Central).
