LIONS KNOCK OFF CHARGERS 87-70

FLORENCE – Trailing by a single point at the half, the University of North Alabama men's basketball team outscored Alabama Huntsville 47-29 over the final 20 minutes to record an 87-70 victory Saturday afternoon at Flowers Hall. With the win, UNA moves into a tie for seventh place in the Gulf South Conference standings, holding an 8-9 league record with three regular-season games remaining.

The victory also completes the season sweep over Chargers for the first time since the 2008-09 season. In the final meeting between the two teams as members of NCAA Division II, North Alabama wraps up the all-time series against UAH with a 38-29 record.

On Saturday, UNA (13-11 overall) shot 60.7 percent in the second half. After trailing 41-40 at the break, the Lions opened the second half on a 7-0 run to grab the lead and never trailed again. UAH (14-10 overall, 7-9 GSC) hit 11 three-point baskets in the first half, but connected on just 3-of-16 shots from long range after the break.

A three-point basket by Jeff Hodge in the opening minute of the second half gave UNA a 43-41 lead. The Lions later led 47-45 before using a 10-2 run to stretch the lead to double digits. Kendall Stafford scored eight points during the spurt, including a basket and free throw to make the score 57-47 with 11:54 remaining.

After a basket by UAH cut the lead to eight, the Lions scored six straight points. Another three-pointer by Hodge pushed the lead to 63-49 to prompt a timeout by the Chargers. UAH got a basket after the break, but the Lions answered with eight straight points to open a 20-point lead. Back-to-back three-pointers by Hodge and Stafford made the score 71-51 with 7:58 remaining. UAH would get no closer than 15 points the rest of the way.

North Alabama finished the game 13-of-26 from three-point range. The Lions also dominated the boards, holding a 43-25 rebounding advantage and getting 18 second-chance points.
