LIONS TENNIS SWEEPS CHRISTIAN BROTHERS

MEMPHIS, Tenn., - After playing in three consecutive one-point decisions, the University of North Alabama men's tennis team enjoyed success early and often in a 9-0 sweep against Christian Brothers on Wednesday. With the win, UNA improves to 3-6 overall and 2-4 in Gulf South Conference play.

The Lions wasted little time jumping out to a commanding lead. Jackson, Tenn., natives, George Markos and Cade Reasons quickly posted an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles. Jason Pimenta and Luca Cirenzi made it 2-0 with an 8-1 win at No. 2 before Miguel Garcia and Austin Racine completed the sweep, winning 8-3 at the No. 1 position.

"It was nice to have a lead going into singles," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "I can't emphasize enough haw much CBU has improved. They competed well."

Pimenta continued his excellent play at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-3 victory. Garcia then clinched the match for the Lions. Trailing 3-0 in each of the first two sets at No. 2 singles, the senior rallied for the 7-5, 6-4 win.

Reasons and Markos each posted impressive 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles respectively. After Gustavo Girao finished off a tough match at No. 4 with a 6-4, 7-5 triumph, Racine was able to overcome sickness and rally for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory.

"I'm proud of this win," said Bishop. "We lost a couple of close matches and needed to taste winning.  It tasted good."
The match was played at the new Snoden Grove Tennis Center in Southaven, Mississippi.

"What a beautiful new tennis center," added Bishop. "It was a privilege to get to play there."

North Alabama will return home to face Lee on March 18 in another key GSC showdown. Match time is set for 9 a.m. at the UNA Tennis Complex.
