LION TENNIS SWEEPS BETHEL ON SENIOR DAY

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama men's and women's tennis teams each posted a 9-0 sweep over Bethel Friday in the final match of the season at the UNA Tennis Complex. The UNA women's team improved to 10-6 on the year while the men improved to 7-8. Both teams extended three-match winning streaks.

On the women's side, senior Donna Haycock had an impressive outing. She teamed with Claudia Arroyo to produce an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles. In singles play, she added another shutout with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 3 spot.

With Bethel competing with only five players, UNA added default victories at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. The Lions also got an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles and added straight-set victories in all five singles matches to complete the shutout.

Seniors on the men's side featured Miguel Garcia and Austin Racine. The duo teamed up for an impressive 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles to get UNA off to a fast start.

After the Lions added an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles, UNA grabbed a 4-0 lead because of default wins at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. Garcia then won 6-0, 6-0 at the top singles position and Racine added a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles. Straight-set wins on the remaining three courts wrapped up the scoring for UNA.

"The senior really stepped up and led the way for us today," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "It's always tough to say goodbye to seniors. They have done an outstanding job as leaders first and players second. They will be missed."

North Alabama will close out the regular season Sunday against Shorter. Match time is set for 1 p.m. at Muscle Shoals High School.
