UNA WOMEN SWEEP SHORTER 9-0

MUSCLE SHOALS – The University of North Alabama women's tennis team closed the regular season with a 9-0 victory over Shorter Sunday at Muscle Shoals High School. It was the fourth straight victory and third straight 9-0 sweep for the Lions, who improve to 11-6 overall and 8-4 in Gulf South Conference play.

With the win, the Lions also clinched the No. 5 seed in the upcoming GSC Tournament and will open play Thursday against fourth-seeded West Alabama at Montgomery's Lagoon Park.

Against Shorter, the Lions jumped out to a 3-0 lead following doubles play. Donna Haycock and Claudia Arroyo were impressive, winning 8-0 at the top position. The duo of Claire DeGeorge and Alisa Savina matched that score with an 8-0 victory at No. 3. Nele Seitz and Nina Linke overcame a slow start before finishing strong with an 8-6 win at No. 2.

Linke quickly increased the lead to 4-0 in singles play. She was ahead 6-0, 0-1 before her opponent retired at No. 2 singles. Seitz clinched the match for the Lions, winning 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4.

UNA quickly won the remaining matches as Haycock (No. 3), Arroyo (No. 1), Sickle (No. 5) and DeGeorge (No. 6) each posted straight sets victories.

"This is exactly what we needed to get us ready for the conference tournament," said UNA head tennis coach Brice Bishop. "The weather created a little adversity, but we handled it well. The women are playing with a lot of confidence."
