SOFTBALL LIONS DOWN ALCORN STATE 6-4

LORMAN, Miss., – The University of North Alabama softball team scored all six runs in the first three innings during a 6-4 win at Alcorn State on Friday. With the victory, the Lions improve to 2-0 on the season and take the first game of a three-game series against the Braves.

As a team, the Lions collected 12 hits, including three triples on the day. Veronica Westfall was 4-for-4 with an RBI while Chloe Deerman added a two-run triple.

UNA wasted little time plating the game's first run. After a leadoff triple by Meleah Hargett, the Lions took a 1-0 lead on an RBI-single by Lexie Harper. Harper later scored in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Hannah Shollenberger to give UNA a two-run lead.

Alcorn State was able to respond in the bottom of the first, getting two runs off three hits to tie the game. The score, however, did not remain tied for long. Westfall led off the top of the second with a triple down the right line. She scored on the play on a throwing error to give North Alabama a 3-2 lead.

UNA sent eight batters to the plate in the third inning and scored three runs with two outs. After a two-out single by Harley Stokes and a walk by Mackenzie Roberts, Deerman cleared the bases with a triple to centerfield. Deerman later scored on Westfall's RBI-single to left field.

North Alabama held the 6-2 lead until the bottom of the seventh inning. Alcorn State added a pair of runs off three hits before the game ended in a rundown to preserve the UNA victory.

Stokes finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate. Harper was 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Laken Distefano (1-0) was credited with the win after working the first three innings. She allowed two runs off four hits with a pair of strikeouts. Junior Jensen Strickland entered in the bottom of the fourth inning and finished the game in the circle to get the save.

UNA will finish its series against Alcorn State on Saturday. The two teams will play a double-header beginning at 11 a.m.
