GARST, STOKES LEAD SOFTBALL TO 3-0 WIN OVER NORTHWESTERN STATE

MEMPHIS, Tenn., – Megan Garst pitched a one-hit shutout and Harley Stokes hit her fourth home run of the season as the University of North Alabama softball team defeated Northwestern State 3-0 Saturday in the second day of the Blues City Classic in Memphis. The win gives the Lions an 11-6 record on the season.
 
It was the second consecutive one-hit shutout by Garst, who improves to 5-3 on the season. The senior from Columbiana retired the first 13 batters before allowing a one-out walk in the bottom of the fourth. After getting a fly out and a strikeout to end the frame, the no-hitter was broken up with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.
 
Garst finished the game with 11 strikeouts in the complete-game effort and has now tossed 12 straight scoreless innings.
 
Offensively, UNA scored all of its runs in the top of the third inning. Veronica Westfall led off the frame with a single and later scored on an error to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. Stokes came to the plate with one out and homered to deep centerfield. The blast also scored Mary Grayson Kilpatrick, who reached on a fielder's choice.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, the Demons drew a walk and had another player reach on an error to bring the tying run to the plate with one out. Garst, however, ended the threat with back-to-back strikeouts.
 
For the game, UNA had five different players record one hit each.
 
UNA will close out play at the event with two games on Sunday. The Lions will play Western Illinois at 11:15 a.m. before facing the host Memphis Tigers at 3:30 p.m.
