MEN’S BASKETBALL KNOCKS OFF DOLPHINS 76-54

FLORENCE – Less than 24 hours after needing overtime to edge Jacksonville by a single point, the University of North Alabama men's basketball team took control early and never let up during a 76-54 home win over the Dolphins on Saturday. The fourth straight win and second consecutive ASUN Conference sweep gives the Lions a 9-3 overall record and keeps the team in first place in the league standings with a 5-1 conference mark.

Mervin James had 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead UNA, which had 11 different players score in the game.

Defensively, the Lions held Jacksonville to only 15 made shots. The Dolphins shot 27.3 percent from the floor, including a 5-of-29 (17 percent) showing in the first half.

UNA held an early 9-7 lead before using a 13-2 run to grab a double-digit lead it would never relinquish. Isaac Chatman started the run with a runner in the lane. A basket and free throw by Detalian Brown stretched the lead before back-to-back three-pointers by James Anderson gave the Lions an 11-point advantage. Brown then drove to the basket for another basket to make the score 22-9 midway through the first half.

The Dolphins would get no closer than 10 the rest of the way. After a three-pointer by Jacksonville made the score 25-15 at the 6:59 mark, the visitors would not hit another field goal for the remainder of the first half. The Lions led 29-18 with 3:35 remaining before closing the half on an 11-0 run to take a 40-18 lead into the break.

The lead only grew over the final 20 minutes of play. UNA led by as many as 28 points on three different occasions.

Anderson finished the game with a trio of three-pointers and had 15 points. Emanuel Littles also pulled down 11 rebounds to go along with his eight points.

UNA will play two games at North Florida Jan. 29-30. Tip-off times are set for 6 p.m. and 4 p.m. (CST) at the UNF Arena in Jacksonville, Fla.
