LIONS WIN TWICE AT WOFFORD INVITATIONAL

SPARTANBURG, S.C., – The University of North Alabama volleyball team opened play at the Wofford Invitational with two victories on Saturday. The Lions defeated Gardner-Webb 3-2 before picking up a 3-0 sweep over South Carolina State to improve to 4-6 on the season. The Lions will face host Wofford on Sunday in the championship match.
 
Against Gardner-Webb, four players reached double figures in kills, including Katy Floyd's match-high 15 kills. UNA trailed 1-0 and 2-1 in the match before rallying for two straight victories.
 
The two teams traded 25-18 wins before the Runnin' Bulldogs grabbed momentum in the third set when the game went to extra points. UNA fought off three set points before getting a set point of its own at 27-26 on a kill by Floyd. Garder-Webb, however, strung together three straight points to get the win and take the overall lead in the match.
 
Another 25-18 win in the fourth set extended the match for the Lions. AK Griggs had three kills and a block in the frame as UNA forced a fifth set for the first time this season.
 
In the final set, the Lions trailed 12-8 before rallying. Gardner-Webb reached match point first at 14-12. A service error on the Bulldogs, however, was followed by a service ace by Tatum Fouche to tie the score.
 
The Lions completed the comeback with two straight points. A block by Maggie Sullivan and Mattrice Harris gave UNA its first lead. Sullivan then connected on a kill to end the match.
 
Kamryn Parsonage added 11 kills for UNA. Griggs and Sullivan added 10 kills each. Breylee Linder paced the offense with 44 assists.
 
Five players produced double-digit dig totals, including Katie Gerig, who notched 20 in the match. Linder (19 digs), Floyd (15 digs) and Parsonage (12 digs) each had double-doubles. Eli Ford rounded out the top defensive performers with 10 digs for the Lions.
 
North Alabama led throughout the match in the 25-7, 25-10, 25-11 win over South Carolina State. Nine different players recorded at least one kill for the Lions, including a match-high eight from Parsonage.
 
Linder had 12 assists while Camy Kling turned in nine assists for the Lions, who hit .438 as a team.
 
Match time against Wofford is set for 10 a.m. (Central) on Sunday.
