MEN’S BASKETBALL COMES UP SHORT AT HOME AGAINST JAX STATE

FLORENCE – Jacksonville State shot nearly 50 percent from the floor and had three players reach double figures in scoring in a 65-55 win over the University of North Alabama men's basketball team Saturday evening at Flowers Hall. With the fourth straight loss, UNA falls to 7-8 on the season and 0-2 in ASUN Conference play.
 
The Gamecocks used a 43-27 rebounding advantage to score 16 second-chance points on the night. The visitors opened the game with six straight points and matched every run the Lions had with one of their own.
 
After UNA rallied to grab leads of 8-7 and 10-9, the Gamecocks responded each time and the Lions were never able to go ahead again.
 
JSU took control late in the first half. After a three-point basket by Dallas Howell tied the score at 21-21, UNA went 1-for-5 down the stretch. The Gamecocks stretched the lead to 28-22 before a basket in the paint by Detalian Brown in the final minute cut the deficit to four points at the break.
 
In the second half, the Lions stayed within striking distance. A basket and free throw by Daniel Ortiz converted a three-point play and tied the score at 36-36 with 15:55 remaining. UNA had a chance to take the lead after a defense stop but a turnover led to a transition basket by the Gamecocks and the home team could not pull even again.
 
North Alabama went 3:43 without connecting from the floor as JSU stretched the lead to double digits. A pair of free throws capped a 14-4 run as the Gamecocks grabbed a 50-40 lead midway through the second half.
 
A three-pointer by Ortiz made the score 59-50 with 4:02 remaining but the Lions would get no closer.
 
Ortiz led all scorers with 20 points on the night. C.J. Brim added 11 points for the Lions.
 
Darian Adams led Jacksonville State (8-6 overall, 1-0 ASUN) with 18 points. For the game, the Gamecocks were 23-of-47 (48.9 percent) from the floor, including six three-point baskets.
 
UNA will host Eastern Kentucky on Tuesday, Jan. 11. Tip-off for the single game is set for 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
