FLORENCE, Ala. – ShunDerrick Powell broke the North Alabama single season rushing record but the Lions came out on the short end of a 35-27 score to Tennessee Tech at Braly Stadium.
The Lions trailed 21-17 at the half but couldn't get any closer in the second half as the Golden Eagles added two third quarter scores to hold off UNA.
Powell rushed for 151 yards to push his season total to 1,467 yards, breaking the UNA record of 1,466 set by Tyrone Rush in 14 games in 1993. With an eight-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, Powell also tied the UNA regular season record with 18 rushing touchdowns. In addition, his 151 yards on the ground marked his seventh 100-yard rushing game of the season, tying the all-time Lion regular season record.
With the loss, North Alabama is now 1-9, while Tennessee Tech improved to 4-6.
The Lions gained 505 yards of total offense with 172 rushing and 333 passing. Quarterback Noah Walters completed 21 of 36 passes for 333 yards and two touchdowns.
Tennessee Tech struck first with a touchdown on its second possession of the game. A 14-yard run by quarterback Jeremiah Oatsvall found the end zone and Hayden Olsen's PAT made it 7-0 at 3:24 of the first quarter.
After missing on a 46-yard field goal attempt earlier in the half, UNA's
Sam Contorno hit a 41-yarder to get the Lions on the board with 11:45 remaining in the second quarter.
The Golden Eagles followed with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Ostsvall to Jayvlan Allen to make it 14-3 at 9:47 of the first half.
ShunDerrick Powell scored UNA's first touchdown of the night on an eight-yard run, capping a 10-play, 76-yard drive. The score, with 5:05 remaining in the second quarter, made it 14-10.
Tennessee Tech scored again with 1:34 left in the half on a four-yard run by O.J. Ross to make it 21-10.
North Alabama took just 55 seconds to score before the half as Noah Walters hit DeMarcus Lacey with a 31-yard touchdown pass with 34 seconds remaining in the half to make it 21-17 at intermission.
Tennessee Tech extended its lead on the first drive of the second half on a 22-yard touchdown run by Justin Pegues. The score made it 28-17 at 8:12 of the third quarter.
UNA followed with a touchdown on its first possession of the second half. Walters hit
Takairee Kenebrew with a 31-yard pass for the score, and Contorno's PAT made it 28-24 with 4:52 left in the third quarter.
The Golden Eagles responded with another TD drive. David Gist scored on an eight-yard run on the final play of the third quarter to make it 35-24.
North Alabama drove inside the TTU 10-yard line on its next possession but couldn't punch it in. Contorno booted a 27-yard field goal to pull UNA to within eight at 35-27.
The Lions will close their 2022 season on November 19 at Memphis.
