LIONS DOWN ALCORN STATE 6-3

VICKSBURG, Miss., – The University of North Alabama softball team wrapped up play at the River City Classic Sunday with a 6-3 victory over host Alcorn State. The win gives UNA an 8-2 record on the season, including a second straight 4-1 mark at a weekend event.
 
Georgia Land homered twice, drove in three runs and finished the day 3-for-4 at the plate. As a team, UNA produced six runs off 11 hits.
 
Emma Broadfoot opened the scoring for the Lions with a two-run double in the top of the first inning. Land extended the lead to 3-0 with a solo blast to lead off the bottom of the second.
 
After the Braves (7-4) cut the deficit to a single run by scoring twice in the bottom of the third, UNA answered with single runs in the top of the fourth, fifth and sixth frames.
 
Another leadoff home run by Land started the scoring in the fourth inning. The senior from Lawrenceburg, Tenn., then had an RBI-single in the top of the fifth. Sidney Bevis wrapped up the scorning with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
 
Alcorn State added another run in the bottom of the seventh but could get no closer.
 
Megan Warhurst started in the circle and worked the first three innings for the Lions. She scattered two runs off five hits with a pair of strikeouts. Maci Birdyshaw pitched the final four innings to get the win. She allowed a run off three hits with four strikeouts to improve to 4-0 on the season.
 
UNA will travel to Birmingham next weekend to play five games at the UAB Blazer Invite. The first game is set for 12:30 Friday afternoon against Austin Peay.
