LIONS SPLIT TWO SOFTBALL GAMES AT BRUIN INVITATIONAL

NASHVILLE, Tenn., – The University of North Alabama softball team struggled to find offense Friday in two games at the Belmont Bruin Invitational. The Lions were shut out for the first time this season during a 5-0 loss to the host Bruins. UNA answered with a 1-0 win over Bradley in the second game.

In the opener, Belmont's Emma Summers recorded a two-hit shutout against the Lions.

The Bruins scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take the early lead. Single runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth frames wrapped up the scoring for the home team.

Georgia Land recorded both of UNA's hits, including a double in the top of the seventh inning.

In the circle, Elena Escobar started and working the first two innings for the Lions. She took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the year after allowing three runs off four hits. Sidney Revels pitched the final four innings for UNA.

Offense was hard to come by for UNA again in the second game. The Lions entered the bottom of the seventh inning with just two hits in a scoreless tie.

After reaching on an error to start the inning, UNA moved pinch-runner Mary Grayson Kilpatrick to second on a sacrifice bunt. An infield single by Harley Stokes moved her to third before Meleah Hargett's ground ball brought home the winning run. Kilpatrck beat the throw home to give the Lions the victory.

Maci Birdyshaw got the pitching victory. She worked all seven innings to earn the complete-game shutout, scattering five hits and striking out four to improve to 8-1 on the season.

The Lions were held to three hits in the second game. Stokes was 2-for-3 at the plate.

UNA will return home to host Colgate on Sunday. First pitch of the double-head is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Hilda B. Anderson Softball Complex.
