FORT MYERS, Fla. -- After FGCU rallied from a three-point deficit in the final minute to force overtime, North Alabama out-scored the Eagles 14-12 in the extra period to take an 87-85 ASUN Conference road win at Alico Arena.
UNA trailed 15-2 early in the game but pulled within five at halftime at 38-35. The Lions then out-scored the Eagles 40-35 in the second half and held a 73-71 lead with seven seconds left on a driving basket by
Jacari Lane. FGCU's Isaiah Thompson then hit a turn-around jumper at the buzzer to tie the game at 73-73 and force overtime.
In the extra period, UNA took the lead for good on a layup by Lane with 3:32 to play. A pair of K.J. Johnson free throws pushed the advantage to seven with just 43 seconds left but FGCU rallied again. A three-point basket by Chase Johnston with 18 seconds left cut it to 86-85. After UNA got another free throw from Johnson, the Eagles had three shot attempts in the final seconds but couldn't put the ball in the basket.
"This win was fantastic," said UNA head coach
Tony Pujol. "The poise that our guys showed was amazing. They had an unbelievable crowd, but our guys stayed composed. We are fighting for position in the conference race and this is one that we had to have to keep pace."
Daniel Ortiz led UNA with 19 points, while Lane had 18, K.J. Johnson 12 and WIll Soucie 10.
In addition to his 18 points, Lane added six rebounds and six assists.
Damian Forrest led UNA with seven rebounds.
The Lions hit 54 percent of their shots in the game and were 11-of-24 on three-point attempts.
With the win, North Alabama is now 14-11 overall and 6-6 in the ASUN Conference. The Lions remain in a tie for sixth in the ASUN standings with Queens and Bellarmine. FGCU is now 14-11 overall and 4-8 in the ASUN.
The win was UNA's first on the road at FGCU since 2020.
North Alabama hosts Austin Peay on Thursday at CB&S Bank Arena.Â
