LIONS OPEN SPRING FOOTBALL PRACTICE

FLORENCE, Ala. -- The University of North Alabama opened its spring football drills on Tuesday with more than 100 student-athletes vying to catch the eye of new head coach Brent Dearmon.

The Lions were on the field for more than 90 minutes and Dearmon said it has felt like a long time coming since he was hired at UNA  on December 3.

"I tell you what, you feel like you're never going to get here and you blink and open your eyes and you're three months in," said Dearmon. It was good to get here. We got here healthy and now you want to stay healthy. It was a good day. It was fun to finally put the helmets on."

Dearmon said he raised the tempo of practice for the Lions on opening day.

"I try to create chaos, that's my goal -- for coaches included," he said. ."What we try to do is practice at an unreal pace and tempo and then that way, games are easy. It's never going to be as fast as we make it out here. I try to blare the speakers right behind the quarterbacks' ears to make it hard on them. I'm yelling and screaming, but we're trying to create chaos every chance we get."

The Lions will return to the practice field on Thursday.
