Soccer edged by Stetson in final road game

Lions to finish season at home against Central Arkansas on Senior Day

DELAND, Fla. (October 20, 2024) – The University of North Alabama soccer team dropped its final Atlantic Sun Conference road game of the season Sunday afternoon, as the Lions fell to Stetson 2-1 in DeLand, Fla.

Stetson (8-10, 3-7 ASUN) got out quickly on UNA (3-13, 1-9 ASUN) as the Eagles scored their first goal in the 13th minute. The Hatters added another goal in the 77th minute to jump to a 2-0 lead. 

The Lions notched a goal in the 89th minute thanks to a penalty kick goal by sophomore midfielder Giada Aldini. This came after a red card penalty was assessed to starting goalkeeper Ashleigh Wise. This was North Alabama's second make on three penalty kicks this season. 

UNA outshout SU in the first half shot column with a six to four advantage. UNA went on to finish with eight shots and three on goal. The Lions got back to their typical offensive scheme, finding the corner 10 times to set up their sets; six came in the first half. 

Senior forward Haley Patterson, the team's shot leader, added two more to her total this season and was one of three shots on goal. Junior forward Olivia Heinert added another shot that was on goal while Aldini added the final one off of her PK. 

In a relatively balanced match, Stetson finished with 10 shots and four on goal to go with eight corners. 

Nineteen players saw the field for Chris Walker today, with only sophomore midfielder Adelyn Speight, senior defender Saniya Johnson, freshman defender Langley Wallace and junior goalkeeper Allanah Blye playing the full 90 minutes. Three freshmen started in Wallace, midfielder Gizelle El Assal and midfielder Emerson Nieroda. This is Wallace's first full 90 minute game of the season. 

North Alabama gets back to Florence, Ala. on Saturday, Oct. 26 to finish off the regular season against Central Arkansas at the Cox Creek Sports Complex. This will be UNA's senior day with eight seniors to be honored before the match.
