ATLANTA (February 21, 2024) – University of North Alabama freshman Izan Orgiles was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 14-20, the league announced Wednesday.
Orgiles earns his first ASUN weekly honor after going a perfect 4-0 in duals against North Dakota and Troy. The ASUN honor is the third in UNA Men's Tennis program history and the second in the last four years after sophomore Lachlan Brain received his first ASUN honor two weeks ago.
Orgiles finished the weekend undefeated across two singles and doubles matches against the Fighting Hawks and the Trojans.
Against North Dakota, Orgiles and partner Alberto Altur defeated Ange-Kevin Koua/Victor Moreno Lozano 6-2 in top flight doubles. In singles, he defeated Jerrall Yasin 6-0, 6-1 from Flight No. 4 to help pace the Lions to a 5-2 team win in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
One day later, Orgiles followed with a 6-4 win over Benjamin Ambrosio/Noah Martens of Troy with partner Lachlan Brain from No. 3 doubles. His 6-1, 6-2 singles win over Ambrosio from the fourth flight helped clinch a win over the Trojans for the first time in 34 years.
The Lions are set to face Alabama A&M from the UNA Tennis Complex on Thursday, Feb. 22, with first serve at 1 p.m.
