MARTIN, Tenn. (September 6, 2024) – The University of North Alabama volleyball team earned a 3-0 sweep Friday night over UT Martin, splitting the day's two contests at the Skyhawk Invitational in Martin, Tenn.

The Lions gained the win over the Skyhawks after dropping the opening match to Missouri State in a 3-0 defeat. Hours later, it was UNA that would sweep its opponent after holding off UT Martin in the competitive bout. North Alabama's offense led the way in the victory, finishing with 50 kills to go with five service aces.

UNA earns its second win of the season to move to 2-4 on the year. Missouri State finished 2-0 in the day's action to improve to 4-2, while UT Martin falls to 2-3.

After Friday's matches, freshman Reese Ricketts leads all players with 30.5 points, totaling 29 kills, 29 digs and three blocks. Five Lions secured double-digit digs, led by freshman Audrey Small, and freshman Autumn Holmes proved to be a force at the net with a team-leading six blocks.

MATCH 1: MISSOURI STATE 3, North Alabama 0

The opening match proved a battle for the Lions, who dropped the opening invitational match to a quality Bears team. Missouri State got out to a fast start with a 6-1 scoring run, but North Alabama closed the gap with a 9-4 run to tie the first set.

With the score at 10 apiece, UNA gained its first lead with a 5-1 run, led by two kills from Tietz and one from graduate Jasmine Brooks. Ricketts, junior Hayley Martin and Sargent provided additional contributions on the offensive end, but the Bears continued to trim the lead with the set ending.

The set remained close down the stretch, with UNA earning a set point with the score at 24-22. The Missouri State offense responded with an ensuing 4-0 run to take the set with a 26-24 win.

North Alabama had a better start to begin the second set, but timely offense continued to spark the Missouri State offense. The Lions' defense held the Bears to their lowest hitting set percentage with .173, but three service aces from Missouri State proved to be difference-makers. Despite six kills from Ricketts, the Lions fell in set two, 25-21.

Another Missouri State scoring run opened the third set, with the Bears jumping out to a 7-1 lead. UNA trailed for the majority of the set, but the Lions continued to fight back to trim the deficit.
