CHARLOTTE (October 19, 2025) – The University of North Alabama volleyball team battled back from a 2-1 deficit against Queens but ultimately fell to the Royals in five sets Sunday afternoon in Charlotte.
North Alabama (11-10, 5-3 ASUN) capped its road slate with a trip to North Carolina, needing five sets to determine the winner.
The Lions came out strong by taking the first set, but the Royals (13-8, 4-4 ASUN) answered back with the next two frames. UNA extended the match with a fourth-set victory, and in the final frame, Queens' offense saw them through en route to the home win.
The Lions were led on offense by junior Kendall Barnes and sophomores Dylann Garner and Reese Ricketts. Barnes totaled a team-high 14 kills followed by 12 from Garner and 11 from Ricketts.
Sophomore Kinslee McGowan led the match with 42 kills and three aces. Junior Ava Martindale had a team-high 15 digs, and junior Nicole Sargent led with four blocks.
UNA struck first with a set-one victory — using efficient offense and net defense. Twelve kills on a .308 hitting percentage carried the Lions to the early lead while totaling three blocks. UNA held the Royals to a .000 hitting percentage to win set one, 25-17.
Queens won the next two frames, taking set two, 25-21, and set three, 25-17.
North Alabama fended off Queens in set four to send it to a fifth frame. The Lions had their best attacking frame with 16 kills on .414 percent hitting with Barnes, Garner and Ricketts leading the attack with 13 combined kills. The back-and-forth frame went down to the wire, but UNA took the fourth set in a 25-23 victory.
The Royals offense paced the way to taking the match in set five. Queens' early run and .733 hitting percentage in frame saw the match out in a 15-7 final set victory.
The Lions return home to start a four-match home stand in CB&S Bank Arena. North Alabama opens the slate on Friday, Oct. 24 against EKU at 6 p.m.
