NOTES
LAST TIME OUT: The UNA cross country teams competed last Friday at the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships, with the men finishing fourth and the women placing 11th. Sophomore Sandra Maiyo finished 13th with her blazing 17:07.1 that broke the long-standing North Alabama 5K record held by Teresa Steele (17:09) since 1985. The men placed in fourth, the highest finish since 2020 where the Lions were one of eight ASUN teams that competed in a reduced field due to COVID-19. The team averaged 24:42 among its five scoring runners — the fastest average in the Division I era — surpassing last year's ASUN mark by 16 seconds. The five men scorers all landed inside the top-50 of the field of 117 participants. Six of the seven women finished with a new personal record.
COURSE PREVIEW: The course at John Hunt Park features a 10-meter-wide, manicured grass surface with multiple spurred loops. This course is located on the south side of the park and accommodates all teams from high school to USA Track & Field meets. There is also about two miles of walking trails for coaches and spectators to see the race.
THE FIELD: A total of 41 teams head to John Hunt Park to compete in the 2025 South Regional. Teams that highlight the event are Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Miami (Fla.) and Tennessee, among others. Other ASUN programs such as Austin Peay, FGCU, Jacksonville, Lipscomb, North Florida and Stetson also venture over.
SECOND TIME AROUND: The Lions have already raced at John Hunt Park this season when Jacksonville State hosted the Southern Showcase in September. The men finished in the top half of the race in 20th of the 48 teams while the women claimed 34th of 52 teams. Both Bett and Maiyo placed inside the top-20 of the race; Bett's 24:03.04 time this season nearly match his eighth place finish at the same race in 2024 (24:02.36). However, one thing was missing this season at the Southern Showcase – head coach Connor Callahan, who welcomed in his newborn Cade Callahan with his wife that same weekend. This time, it will be birthday weekend for the head coach and one can bet(t) he isn't missing this one.
LAST SEASON REWIND: The 2024 South Regional saw Bett make his regional debut with a time of 30:34.9, securing the 10K school record in Tallahassee, Fla. The men finished 15th overall in the region while the women took home 29th – headlined by Laura Mobley (22:45.6) and Janeth Jepkirui (23:03.3).
