Women’s Golf continues road to April in Gulf Shores

Lions have three more events before ASUN Championship

GULF SHORES, Ala. (March 15, 2054) – The University of North Alabama women's golf team begins another three-day tournament on Sunday in lower Alabama, as the Lions will compete in the Bama Beach Bash hosted by UAB starting Sunday in Gulf Shores, Ala.

The Lions made it to Gulf Shores on Friday in order to avoid Saturday's storms — and weather permitting — a Saturday window for practice. Play will begin with a near-noon tee time on Sunday.

THE FIELD: The Lions are one of 11 programs in the field this week, joining a pair of in-state programs in South Alabama and host school UAB. Three programs also represent the Atlantic Sun Conference, including UNA, West Georgia and EKU. The rest of the field includes Iowa State, Southern Miss, Georgia State, UAlbany, UNC Asheville and East Texas A&M.

THE COURSE: The Golf Club's 18 championship holes were designed by the renowned father-son team of Jay and Carter Morrish, and feature a few sharp doglegs, bunkers, and the occasional water hazard. The course was built in the 1960s and was the first golf course in Gulf Shores, Ala. In November 2005, the course closed to undergo a complete renovation. The renovation lengthened the par 71 course by 300 yards and added numerous water features, enhanced fairways and additional bunkers.

THE LINEUP: Redshirt sophomore Kerigan Klauber is the only new addition to the lineup this week following an individual top 20 finish last week at RTJ Silver Lakes. She will play in the No. 5 spot behind seniors Jahnavi Prakhya and Hannah Dees and freshmen Sirichaya Chanpen and Elsa Maren Steinarsdottir.

ORDER OF EVENTS: Much like last week's tournament at RTJ Silver Lakes, UNA will play one 18-hole round each day from Sunday-Tuesday. The first tee time is set for 10:30 a.m. UNA's first grouping will begin at 11:50 a.m. The Lions are paired with West Georgia, Southern Miss and UAlbany for the first round.

LAST TIME OUT: UNA placed fourth of seven teams in the Chris Banister Golf Classic last week in Glencoe, Ala. The Lions had the lowest round of all teams on the final day, becoming the only team to move up the leaderboard on the final day. Prakhya was the only player in the tournament to have a round under-par, carding a two-under 70 in the final frame.

PAVING THE WAY: On Thursday, Prakhya was named ASUN Co-Golfer of the Week along with Stetson's Isaki Sakashita. This marks the second all-time weekly award for the UNA program, who is just its seventh season. The first was won by Jackie Klemm on March 9, 2023. Prakhya has enjoyed some "firsts" for the program since starting her career four years ago, including the first individual win at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate in 2022. She is also the only Lion to win postseason awards, earning ASUN All-Freshman in 2022 and Third Team All-ASUN in 2024.
