Women’s golf surges up to fourth place finish in Macon

Chanpen finishes even round to rise 35 spots; Prakhya finishes sixth overall at six-over

MACON, Ga. (April 8, 2025) – The University of North Alabama women's golf team finished a two round tournament in Macon, Ga. on Tuesday, placing fourth out of 10 teams at the Brickyard Collegiate hosted by Mercer.

The tournament consisted of two 18-hole rounds — one on Sunday and one on Tuesday. Play was suspended Monday due to weather, but the course dried up successfully and allowed for ideal playing conditions.

UNA took advantage with a solid round, moving one spot up the final leaderboard. The Lions had the second-lowest round of any team with a collective 13-over, finishing just 12 strokes back of the winner and three strokes away from the podium.

Host school Mercer won the tournament with a 26-over-par 602 finish, followed by Xavier at 28-over-par 604 and the No. 3 ranked NJCAA team Seminole State College in third at 35-over-par 611. UNA carded a 38-over-par 614 to defeat Arkansas State, Belmont, Winthrop, Longwood, USC Upstate and fellow Atlantic Sun Conference member West Georgia.

Senior Jahnavi Prakhya positioned herself well on the final day, maintaining her place among the top 10 golfers with a sixth-place finish. She turned in a consistent card of 75-75=150 to finish six-over and move up one spot from her first round placement.

Fellow senior Hannah Dees also stayed consistent with a 76+77=153 to finish nine-over. This put her in 14th place. The Fairhope, Ala. native has finished in the top 20 four times in five tournaments this Spring.

The largest jump up the leaderboard came from true freshman Sirichaya Chanpen with an impressive round, finishing even for the day to turn in an 83-72=155 to finish 11-over. Her final round included three birdies, 12 pars and just three bogeys. She moved up 35 spots from the first round to finish 20th, representing the largest jump in the field. She was one of only four players even or better on the final day along with players from Belmont, Seminole State and an individual from Florida State.

Another improved round came from fellow freshman Elsa Maren Steinarsdottir, who moved up 15 spots to finish 28th overall at 14-over. Redshirt sophomore Kerigan Klauber rounded out the lineup at 21-over, while freshman Olivia Whittle competed as an individual at 24-over.

UNA finished with 12 birdies in the tournament, including seven in the final round. Prakhya led the way with four birdies.

This served as the final regular season tournament for North Alabama, who returns to action next Sunday, April 13 for the 2025 Atlantic Sun Conference Championship hosted at nearby RTJ Hampton Cove Highlands in Huntsville, Ala.
