ONEONTA, Ala. (September 22, 2025) – The University of North Alabama men's golf team sits in third place after the first two rounds of the GMAC Invitational, played Monday at Limestone Springs Golf Course.
Senior Sebastian Bengtsson led the Lions with a 3-under-par performance, placing him fourth overall on the leaderboard. He tallied 10 birdies through 36 holes, tying with teammate Andrew Ferworn for second-most in the field.
This is a two-day tournament, as the team played 36 holes today. The Lions finished in third despite a leaderboard swing that saw the Lions as low as eighth and as high as first.
Not one team finished under par for the day and only one team, Lipscomb, broke even.
As a team, North Alabama had a steady day as it finished three-over with a 563 score. The course spans 6,860 yards and is a par-70 for the tournament.
The Lions were an impressive 11-under on par-5s and recorded 39 birdies as a team — 20 of which came from Bengtsson and Ferworn.UNA led all teams in par-5s, birdies and eagles for the day.
Lipscomb and North Alabama were neck and neck all day. The Bisons posted a seven-over first round before returning to even-par with a seven-under second round.
Florida Atlantic took sole possession of second place at two-over. Central Arkansas and UNA tied at three-over for third. Winthrop and Jacksonville State tied for fifth as they are two strokes back from UNA.
The host school, UAB, is nine-over for seventh while ASUN opponent West Georgia finished the day in eighth at 14-over. Samford, Queens and USC Upstate currently claim a three-way tie for ninth at 19-over. SELU and Alabama State finalize the last two spots.
Bengtsson's 66 card during the first round tied his best at North Alabama and slides in for fifth all-time on the lowest Division I individual round leaderboard. He finished three-under at 137 for the day.
Xing Luo was the second Lion at 14th as he broke even with rounds of 70-70. Only 17 of the 75 golfers across the field finished even or under par today.
Bengtsson had 10 birdies while Luo finishedwith eight. The next Lion, Ferworn, claimed 10 birdies to finish in 21st. He scored a 142, two-over day. Aside from Bengtsson, he was the only other Lion to post an under-par round with a 68 second round.
The two freshman, Walter Waineby and Jedd Brady, shored up the remaining two scoring slots for UNA. Waineby finished in a tie for 28th at four-over while Brady finished in 71st.
Individual participant Luke Davis had a respectable five-over day to claim 36th. He sunk five birdies and an eagle between the pair of rounds.
"Not our best day, but the guys fought hard," said The Schmitz Family Head Men's Golf Coach, Austin Phillips. "(We are) still in a position to win. It's hard to be at the top, and they continue to do so. I truthfully believe we will win tomorrow, and I'm all in on them tomorrow."
North Alabama finishes the GMAC Invitational tomorrow at Limestone Springs Golf Course.
