VOLLEYBALL LIONS DOWN UNION 3-1 ON SENIOR NIGHT

FLORENCE – North Alabama's four seniors each played a key role in the Lion's 3-1 home win over Union Tuesday evening in Gulf South Conference volleyball action. Playing in the final regular-season match at Flowers Hall, UNA picked up its fourth straight win to improve to 17-9 overall and 13-4 in GSC play.

The 25-20, 25-22, 26-28, 25-15 victory also completes the season sweep over Union and keeps UNA in third place in the GSC standings. North Alabama also defeated the Bulldogs 3-1 on Sept. 23, in Jackson, Tenn.

On Tuesday, the Lions held off a late surge by the visitors. Union rallied three different times in the third set, avoiding a sweep with a 28-26 win. UNA, however, dominated the fourth set, getting 14 kills and holding the Bulldogs to a -.070 team hitting percentage.

Megan Gorey hit .341 with 16 kills to lead the Lions. Fellow seniors Joanna Calhoun (15 digs) and Shantel Federick (12 digs) and LeAnna Lloyd (five blocks) all provided key defensive support. For the match, Union hit .067 and had only one player reached double figures in kills.

Natasha Fomina also had a solid outing for the Lions. The sophomore had 10 kills while setter Andrea De Leon produced 42 assists and 12 digs on the night. Freshman Ashtyn Kapovich led all players with 26 digs. Sarah Ann Tillery also reached double digits in the category with 13 digs for North Alabama.

UNA will close out the regular season with three straight road matches, beginning Friday at Valdosta State. Match time is set for 5 p.m. (CST) at The Complex on the VSU campus.
