UNA TAKES SOFTBALL SERIES AT UNION WITH 1-0 VICTORY

JACKSON, Tenn., – A single run in the top of the second inning was enough to give the University of North Alabama softball team a 1-0 victory over Union on Sunday, giving the Lions the series victory in Gulf South Conference play. The win gives UNA a 23-5 record on the season with a 10-4 mark in league action.

Courtney Shields connected on an RBI-single to centerfield that scored Avery Godwin from second base. Avery had walked to reach base and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Harlie Barkley. The lone run would prove to be the only score of the contest as UNA grabbed two wins in three tries at Union.

Hillary Carpenter allowed only one hit on the day to notch her fifth complete-game shutout of the season. She struck out two and improved to 12-2 on the season.

North Alabama will take a break from GSC play with a midweek double-header at Spring Hill College on Tuesday, March 24. The Lions made changes to their spring break schedule, dropping games at Illinois-Springfield and McKendree. UNA will play two games against the Badgers (23-4) at noon and 2 p.m. before returning to conference action the following weekend by hosting UAH.
